Improving QoE (quality of experience) continues to gain prominence this year as CSPs and vendors strive to meet subscriber expectations for seamless streaming video and online gaming over a wide variety of consumer devices. ZTE discussed the importance of its data analytics–based QoE solution during its analyst conference earlier this month in Shanghai.

Big data–based QoE metrics feed into network adjustments

The pressure to improve QoE is gaining momentum as CSPs continue to lose advertising dollars when subscribers close down applications in frustration. Broadband wireline CSPs are learning that high levels of bandwidth alone do not guarantee QoE. While QoE is subjective compared to objective network measurements such as round-trip delay, subscribers know when their experiences do not meet their expectations.

ZTE is working with its CSP customers to analyze the variables affecting QoE. Its embedded network solution captures massive amounts of data and then analyzes it to determine the best approach to meeting subscriber requirements within network design parameters.

Big data analytics is a key part of ZTE’s QoE solution. Data is needed to determine the optimal balance between sufficient video quality and buffering due to network limitations. QoE analytics must also take into account an operator’s wireline access network design, the wide range of applications being offered by the operator and OTTs, and the numerous viewing and gaming devices used within subscribers’ homes.

Ideally, QoE data measurements would include CPE-based analytics to provide end-to-end data collection, but CSPs are not willing to swap out existing equipment just for QoE functionalities. Consequently ZTE’s solution strives to provide sufficient network measurement analytics without CPE-based data for the time being.

Increasingly, CSPs see QoE metrics as a competitive advantage, leading to improved network design and bandwidth-on-demand to meet subscriber expectations. ZTE is playing a supporting role in the movement to QoE.
