This is an update on the UK telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, TV, OTT video, operator initiatives, M&A, and regulation. It includes subscription, revenue, and technology forecasts for these services.


  • The UK market is one of the largest in Europe, with intense competition. Mobile is forecast to grow around 4% between end-2017 and end-2022, fixed broadband is forecast to grow 6%, and pay TV is set to decline by 2%. OTT video services subscriptions such a Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and NowTV are expected to account to over 20 million by 2022.
  • Mobile service revenues have declined for the past two years and are expected to stabilize and turn positive from 2019. On the fixed side, broadband revenues grew around 5% in the past two years, driven by NGN networks and multiplay services.
  • BT launched BT Plus, the UK’s first converged fiber and 4G plan in October 2018. Vodafone launched Voxi, the dedicated youth mobile offering in 2017. Three UK also introduced a new sub-brand, Smarty, to offer low-cost mobile services aimed at the youth market, in 2017.
