Summary

While we continue to observe the telecom data center (DC) divestiture trend in the market, Telekom Malaysia (TM) has bucked the trend by completing its twin-core DC offering with its latest Klang Valley Core Data Center (KVDC) in Cyberjaya, Malaysia's industrial heartland. This initiative is part of TM's continued expansion of its service offerings under its enterprise and public sector business solutions arm, TM ONE, following the opening of the first DC, the Iskandar Puteri Data Center (IPDC), in November 2017 in Nusajaya (an economic development zone in the southwestern tip of Peninsular Malaysia). TM ONE now has 11 DCs in operation nationally and is Malaysia's largest retail DC provider. The main advantage TM ONE has over its peers, however, is its accreditation of tier-3 Constructed Facilities and Design by the Uptime Institute and its twin-core approach for business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) solutions with options for site-to-site mirroring.

KVDC completes the twin-core DC exchange to serve two key economic regions in Malaysia

It is no longer sufficient for any carrier today to simply offer DC services. More than that, it is about a strategic location. The ability to help enterprise customers to host their infrastructure, to offer them the space to do it themselves, or to just interconnect with a broad ecosystem of other providers from a single DC are all more critical than ever before to support today's energy-demanding, high-performance big data computing.

TM ONE's newly launched KVDC, in tandem with the IPDC, will offer a range of DC services to meet Malaysia's anticipated growth in data and hosting requirements. In fact, the new KVDC has also marked the completion of TM ONE's twin-core DC exchange, serving the two economic regions (central region and Iskandar region), which are 300km apart, with a 100Gbps digital superhighway. Having both DCs in the same country eliminates headaches with managing data across borders, and the network latency across the distance is short enough that active/active failover deployments in both DCs can work. This is crucial for serving as BC/DR solutions and for supporting domestic data sovereignty restrictions for data-sensitive industries such as government, healthcare, and financial services.

As with IPDC, KVDC has been accredited with tier-3 Constructed Facilities and Design by the Uptime Institute. This means TM ONE dominates with two out of three tier-3 certifications in the country. KVDC is also a carrier-neutral and green facility that has dual redundant power supplies and multiple diverse fiber paths for resilience and low-latency connectivity. The facility will support up to 20 megawatts of power and 90,000 square feet (8,362 square meters) of white space when fully built out. The site also offers 20,000 square feet (1,858 square meters) of office suites and workspace.

TM ONE has evidence that its DC strategy is delivering. With IPDC, the carrier was recognized as the Best Data Center Services Provider at Telecom Asia Awards 2018 for its dedication to delivering top-notch data center infrastructure and best-in-class managed services to its customers. Indeed, the real value will be in a DC provider's ability to offer more than "ping, power, and pipe." TM ONE has strategically ramped up BC/DR, together with managed security, DC assessment services, real-time analytics, smart hand, edge network connections, and integrated multi-hybrid cloud as key differentiating value propositions.
