Introduction

This is an update on the Switzerland telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, operator initiatives, M&A, and regulation. It includes subscription, revenue, and technology forecasts for mobile and fixed broadband.

Highlights

  • Switzerland's high-income households are an advantage for its telecoms market as they are willing to pay for the best services – this in turn drives ARPU and revenue for operators. The incumbent, Swisscom, continues to dominate – a concern for new entrants in the fixed and mobile markets.
  • In September 2016, Swisscom became the first European operator to introduce G.fast in the live network. This new standard enables bandwidths of up to 500Mbps in FTTS/B networks.
  • Switzerland's largest cable company UPC Cablecom (subsidiary of Liberty Global) rebranded to UPC in May 2016. The company is operating in Switzerland and Austria under this brand.
