This is an update on the Russian telecoms market, including mobile and fixed market analysis and forecasts. It also looks at recent operator initiatives and content strategies, development and adoption of NGA technologies, M&A activity and regulation.

  • Price competition in the Russian mobile market continued to be aggressive in 2015. The major challenge for mobile operators is to increase low data prices while maintaining data revenues in a market affected by an economic crisis. With this in mind, operators started bundling music and video content in their data bundles to add value for subscribers, increase data usage, and ensure customer loyalty.
  • The economic crisis led to more network-sharing deals to cope with currency fluctuations and avoid sharp capex increases. Beyond connectivity, key areas of operators’ focus for generating additional revenues are big data, M2M, and data centers.
  • MTS and Ericsson partnered to develop 5G and IoT technologies in Russia. The operator is planning to d.eploy a test system in 2016 and demonstrate 5G during the 2018 World Cup. MegaFon and Huawei are also working on trialing 5G at the 2018 World Cup
