Introduction

As part of Ovum's ongoing Telco Services Innovation Radar project, we reviewed 99 announcements of innovative services launched by service providers around the world in May 2017. Our selection for innovation of the month is Croatian incumbent Hrvatski Telekom’s electronic record system for municipal waste collection, an IoT- and app-based innovation that connects the consumer segment with the government.

Highlights

  • Hrvatski Telekom, in collaboration with EcoMobile, has launched a pilot project for a smart electronic waste collection system in Velika Gorica (a city close to the Croatian capital, Zagreb) that will optimize business operations of municipal center VG Goricanka and bring savings for citizens.
  • The smart system includes electronic waste logging records, smart sensors for waste container sequencing, and the "My Waste" information and geolocation system, which will be available to citizens via a mobile application.
  • Billing for waste collection and disposal services will be done by volume and collection rate or mass of waste, with households paying in accordance with their actual habits.
