Introduction

2017 will be another sobering year for fixed and mobile broadband operators. All the problems faced in 2016 will continue to provide headaches for CSPs around the globe.

Highlights

  • Competition will continue to put pressure on total subscriptions and revenues in 2017, but broadband services will provide some welcome revenue growth.
  • 2017 will be the year when DOCSIS 3.1 and G.fast-enabled services will start to multiply, and CSPs will launch an increasing number of gigabit-speed tiers on non-FTTP networks for the first time. However, monetization of these gigabit fixed broadband speeds will be harder to achieve given that there are few clear demand drivers. At best, operators will be able to charge moderate premiums.
  • Operators must recognize the importance of indirect monetization. Operators must drive down churn rates. Loyalty schemes must be relevant to the user and tie in to increasing revenue spend as well as reducing churn.
