Wireline broadband access equipment revenues exceeded $2.1bn in 2Q16, down a mere 1% from the previous quarter but up 11% compared to the year-ago quarter (YoY).

  • Broadband access equipment revenues will remain strong in 2016, but Ovum expects a softening in the PON market. China's operators are continuing to issue large tenders but there is oversupply at the GPON optical component level, which suggests a future softening in the equipment market.
  • While the broadband access equipment market will continue to be dominated by Huawei, ZTE, and Nokia, Calix and Adtran were both named as vendors in Verizon's announced testing of NG-PON2 equipment. Next-gen PON is providing a potential entry point for second-tier vendors in the US.
  • Next-gen broadband equipment is shipping for fiber, copper, and coax. Competition around bandwidth is continuing in numerous countries, pushing operators to upgrade their networks to support higher-bandwidth offerings.
