Introduction

This report provides a view into optical networking (ON) market share and competitive trends during 4Q15 and full-year 2015. Segments include aggregation, bandwidth management, WDM/CPO-T, and SLTE.

Highlights

  • ON spending in 4Q15 grew versus the year-earlier quarter for the fifth consecutive time, pushing full-year spending for 2015 to $14.9bn, 6.1% higher than 2014. Huawei maintains its grip on market leadership. The top five market share gainers for 2015 were Fiberhome, Huawei, Infinera, Ciena, and Adva.
  • The market grew in all regions except EMEA in 2015, but Western Europe is doing quite well despite the weaker euro versus US dollar. The ON vendor landscape will be smaller in 2016 with Ciena, Infinera, and Nokia having closed on acquisitions of Cyan, Transmode, and Alcatel-Lucent respectively. Additionally, Cisco and Ericsson formed a strategic partnership that includes ON gear and Juniper agreed to acquire BTI Systems.
  • Global spending on WDM/CPO-T exceeded $11.2bn in 2015, 75% of total global ON market. This is up from 74% in 2014. Spending on 100G surpassed $5.1bn, up 25% from the 2014 levels.
