While we have reported on NG-PON2 (TWDM PON) operator field trials over the past few months, Verizon recently pushed the testing further by simulating a fault, tuning to a new wavelength, and restoring service in seconds. Cisco supplied the equipment with support from PT (Portugal Telecom) Inovacao.

Verizon tests TWDM’s wavelength tuning and restoration – successfully

Recently Verizon announced successful field testing of TWDM PON equipment from Verizon’s central office in Framingham, Massachusetts, to a FiOS customer’s home and to a business location. Verizon tested two key features of TWDM PON:

  • coexistence with GPON – the ability to add TWDM PON on top of an existing GPON network

  • multiple wavelengths – the ability to assign different wavelengths to different customers and to move customers quickly from one wavelength to another.

Verizon has an existing GPON network. TWDM PON’s coexistence with GPON means no changes are required to the ODN itself, including fibers, splitters, distributions frames and such, thereby preserving the investment in GPON. Verizon can decide to deploy TWDM PON where it has identified new market opportunities, such as for enterprise customers or residential customers seeking 10Gbps bandwidth.

TWDM PON’s multiple wavelengths enable Verizon to focus on enterprise customers, offering them a range of bandwidth speeds on a single wavelength or supporting a single customer with multiple wavelengths if more bandwidth is needed. In addition, the multiple-wavelength design provides service protection. Verizon simulated a fault in the central office equipment, and the customer’s ONT tuned to another wavelength, providing fast 10G service restoration.

Ovum believes that TWDM PON could be a good fit if Verizon pursues enterprise and high-ARPU residential customers. Verizon can offer higher speeds in its access network while supporting fast service restoration for enterprise customers.
