Summary

Alcatel-Lucent has announced the appointment of Bhaskar Gorti, formerly general manager of Oracle’s Communications unit, to lead its IP Platforms business, which includes CloudBand and network functions virtualization (NFV) activities. The move is important for both vendors: Gorti brings considerable software expertise to Alcatel-Lucent, and Oracle will need to replace a well-respected manager as it seeks to broaden its influence in the telecoms market.

One vendor’s loss is another’s gain

Bhaskar Gorti, general manager and SVP of Oracle’s telecoms business unit, has departed the company to head up Alcatel-Lucent’s most important division: IP Platforms. This includes cloud, OSS, policy and charging, NFV, and the CloudBand NFV platform that is a vital strategic asset of Alcatel-Lucent’s portfolio.

Gorti joined Oracle in 2006 when his own company, Portal Software, was acquired by the vendor. Oracle has yet to announce who will replace Gorti, although filling the position quickly will help maintain Oracle’s momentum in the telecoms and NFV market at a time of blossoming opportunity for software vendors.

Gorti’s appointment is a milestone for Alcatel-Lucent. His predecessor as head of Alcatel-Lucent’s IP platforms, Andrew McDonald, had a background in IP and wireless network management, products with closer ties to hardware than software. Gorti brings considerable software management expertise, which is vital for Alcatel-Lucent’s key growth areas, primarily NFV and CloudBand. The announcement also comes at a time when Alcatel-Lucent reports solid financials and a positive outlook after implementing the Shift plan.
