AirWatch recently announced Workspace One as both a name change for and an upgrade to its advanced enterprise mobility management (EMM) platform. The platform also offers many aspects of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) services, including advanced security, single sign-on (SSO), application support, and dynamic network features. AirWatch continues to move toward the mobile, digital workplace trend that emerged in 2015.

Shifting to a mobile, digital workspace

Part of AirWatch’s announcement was a simple rebranding of its legacy EMM solution, but the added features, applications, and dynamic network enhancements provide more evidence of the transformation to a digital, mobile workspace. The three packages – Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise – provide a full range, leading toward the convergence of VDI, mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM), and EMM features in one workspace offer.

Workspace One also allows more integration of the network, features, and applications with use of its NSX technology, including a micro-segmentation capability to provide VPN, security, and login on a dynamic basis by device, application, or user. This may seem a subtle capability and list of features, but this ability allows corporate IT to ensure the user device and application are secure on a transaction basis. With ever more employees using multiple devices, this is increasingly critical for employee productivity and workplace flexibility. AirWatch uses the term “conditional access” to describe this dynamic, on-demand VPN per application service. Device usage analytics is yet another feature that will help corporate IT staff to manage devices and assess which applications are being used by which devices.

Ovum expects many more workspace offers to demonstrate further convergence of EMM and VDI offers with bits of MDM and MAM to support knowledge workers with multiple devices. Dynamic VPN, SSO, and integrated security by application or device will become standard ingredients.
