Within the next few years, Ovum does not expect serious consumer demand for cellular-compatible smart watches. Given this, Ovum suggests that vendors should pay more attention to exploring the potential of simple cellular wearables for those who care about children, elderly parents, and pets.


  • Cellular-connected wearable devices are still not very common: Of the 415 wearable devices commercially available at the end of 2015, only 27 featured cellular connectivity. Ovum estimates that cellular-connected wearables accounted for approximately 4% of total wearable devices sold, totaling only 2.4 million units in 2015.
  • The segment of cellular-connected wearables is not homogeneous and includes two major groups of devices: cellular smart watches and cellular guarding devices.
