Introduction

Mobile World Congress has traditionally been the time for consumer technology companies to unveil their latest mobility products and technologies. MWC 2017’s announcements were dominated by digital assistants and other small improvements, but the absence of the Samsung Galaxy S8 overshadowed all the smartphone releases.

Highlights

  • Despite Samsung postponing the launch of its flagship smartphone, none of Samsung’s Android competitors were able to step into the press coverage void left behind. Instead, the Nokia 3310 stole all the attention away from the premium smartphones at the show.
  • While Samsung should not be overly worried about what its competitors announced in the premium segment, the mid-range announcements demand much more attention as more capable and cheaper mid-range devices will begin to eat into high-end sales.
  • Digital assistants were the hot consumer technology at the show, but despite some high-profile announcements, the lack of language support is a fundamental problem that will greatly limit the impact of such assistants.
