Introduction

This is an update of the Angolan TV market covering an overview of the market, pay-TV landscape, next generation TV & OTT, and TV advertising expenditure. It includes TV subscriptions and revenue forecast for the period 2017–22.

Highlights

  • Angola had 2.2 million TV households, representing 50% household penetration, at end-2016. Pay TV accounted for 46% of total TV households. The country's pay-TV market is dominated by Zap TV, a pay DTH service operated by Portuguese operator Zon, and South Africa's Multichoice, with the two taking a combined market share of 85%.
  • Angola is way behind the ITU-mandated deadline for analog terrestrial switch-off. A limited digital terrestrial TV (DTT) service launched in 2016, although the country is planning a full-scale DTT service in 2017. The $386m project will be undertaken by the country's public broadcaster Televisao Publica de Angola (TPA).
  • Ovum forecasts that Angola will have 3.9 million TV households at end-2022. The pay-TV market will have 1.7 million subscribing households, thus accounting for 42% of total TV households. Pay-TV revenue will increase by 19% from $242m in 2017 to $288m in 2022.
