Introduction

This is an update of Angola's TV market, covering an overview of the market, pay-TV landscape, next generation TV & OTT, and TV advertising expenditure. It includes TV subscriptions and revenue forecasts for the period 2016–21.

Highlights

  • Angola had 2 million TV households, representing 47% household penetration, at end-2015. Pay-TV accounted for 53% of total TV households. The country's pay-TV market is dominated by Zap TV, a pay DTH service operated by Portuguese operator Zon, and South Africa's Multichoice, with the two taking a combined market share of 86%.
  • Angola is finally set to launch its digital terrestrial TV (DTT) service in 2016. The government formed an interministerial working group in April 2016 to oversee the project, which is being handled by Infrasat, the business unit of state-owned Angola Telecom. It will use a new satellite, Angosat 1, to facilitate channel delivery to DTT transmitters.
  • Despite developments in the mobile broadband segment, such as the launch of two commercial Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks, Angola is yet to embrace the development of home-grown over-the-top (OTT) and multiscreen services. Aflix and Netflix are the only video-on-demand (VoD) platforms available in the market.
