Introduction

IBM is starting a commercial early access program, which will provide selected customers and partners with access to systems having more than five qubits, and help them create and refine new algorithms for exploiting quantum computing.

Highlights

  • IBM is building an "approximate" universal quantum computer, which can run the full potential of quantum algorithms to solve multiple functions at a time. It, therefore, significantly expands the scope of problems but faces the challenge of dealing with noise.

Features and Benefits

  • Analyzes IBM's commercial early access program.
  • Assesses the various categories of quantum computers.

Key questions answered

  • What is "quantum volume" and how does it represent the usable capacity of a quantum computer?
  • Are we likely to see commercial 50-qubit quantum computers in the next few years?

Ovum view

  • IBM's quantum experience is being expanded to a commercial early access program
  • IBM categorizes quantum computers into three types
  • Next-generation quantum computers open up new opportunities
