Alongside the launch of the S8, Samsung announced the Desktop Experience (DeX), a docking device and UI that will enable Samsung S8 and S8 Plus owners to easily connect their smartphone to a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. In addition to the consumer use case, the DeX will also support a more flexible work style, helping employees work productively not only when on the move, but also when engaging in more meticulous desktop-based work. The Samsung DeX is not the only docking device on the market, but its announcement demonstrates Samsung's commitment to broadening the use cases for mobile technologies, converging the traditional desktop and mobile working.

Samsung DeX can help enable more flexible workstyles, but enterprises must ensure appropriate EMM capabilities are in place

Being able to easily dock a smartphone to undertake work in applications that do not translate well to mobile interfaces – such as spreadsheets, for example – is a compelling enterprise use case for technology such as Samsung DeX. Smartphones are heavily utilized within organizations, with the bulk of employee time being spent in productivity applications, particularly email. Samsung DeX can support employees to utilize smartphones for an increased number of tasks, helping them work more productively and flexibly. For many employees, docking technology such as Samsung DeX will enable them to undertake most, if not all, of their daily work via a smartphone. With this in mind, and as more employees engage in a broader set of work activities via mobile devices, enterprises must ensure they have the appropriate enterprise mobility management (EMM) capabilities in place. EMM solutions help businesses secure a device estate and ensure that employees can safely and easily access the work resources they need.

VMware and Citrix have both formed partnerships with Samsung that will enable DeX users to access full Windows desktops and applications via a smartphone over the dock. The type of mainstream attention the technology is receiving will certainly be welcome to VMware, which over the past year has invested heavily in its digital workspace offering, Workspace ONE. Workspace ONE enables employees to access all their cloud, Windows, and mobile apps via a single device and identity. Digital workspace solutions such as Workspace ONE are well complemented by Samsung DeX; together, they can enable a more fluid work experience that does not require users to work across multiple different devices.
