IBM and Box have announced a “strategic and transformational relationship” that will focus on extending the reach and range of one another’s complementary content management offerings. The vendors have outlined their goal to develop and deliver joint solutions and new integrations that will provide organizations with new ways for employees to get work done, in the cloud and on-premise, in a mobile-first world.

Each party brings something of value to the table. Box offers a competitive, cloud-first, mobile-first content collaboration platform, plus an innovative, early adopter customer base. IBM has its enterprise content management (ECM) portfolio, a customer base seeking to modernize and/or extend on-premise content-based line-of-business applications, plus industry leading know-how.
Further down the line, new apps and content experiences are expected. For example, content stored in the Box collaboration platform, along with structured and unstructured information residing in IBM’s enterprise email and social business platforms, may be provided to business users through the use of IBM’s new knowledge worker tools and its “cognitive computing” technology, based on Watson Analytics.
IBM and Box know why they are partnering and have articulated this well. The two companies have presented high-level plans for how they intend to win business together and these bear scrutiny. This offering is of relevance to a modest section of the ECM market, and is likely to be profitable. A tantalizing glimpse has been offered into the potential of future solutions for the digital enterprise – and Ovum will assess these when they are delivered.
