Introduction

This is an update of the Kuwait telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, operator initiatives, consumer market trends, and regulation. It includes subscriptions and revenue forecasts for mobile and fixed broadband.

Highlights

  • Kuwait's telecoms sector is characterized by aggressive competition among service providers. Operators in Kuwait are focusing more on data services to increase ARPU, as well as in enhancing their networks. They have launched multiple data plans and smartphone bundles to boost data use over their LTE networks. Operators are also investing in LTE, LTE-A, and fiber to enable new revenue streams from IoT, cloud services, and M2M services.
  • Kuwait's telecoms market has a highly developed mobile sector with high mobile penetration. Mobile broadband accounts for the majority of total broadband connections. At end-3Q17, Kuwait had 6.97 million mobile subscriptions and 158,058 fixed broadband subscriptions.
  • In October 2017, Zain Kuwait partnered with Towershare Management to sell and lease back the passive physical infrastructure of its mobile tower portfolio in Kuwait to IHS Holding Limited. The transaction is valued at $165m and will enable Zain to focus on its core competencies while accelerating its investments in network upgrades to meet growing demand for mobile data in the region.
