Introduction

This report examines how T Star, a newcomer to the Taiwan telecoms scene, has impacted and disrupted incumbent CSPs and influenced market direction. This is part of Ovum’s Disrupter Case Study series, which assesses mobile and fixed broadband market challengers in the market.

  • To be effective, disrupters need to differentiate on more than just price. T Star has done that through tariff innovation and some network differentiation. For instance, it had the most extensive LTE network coverage initially, and was the first operator to launch VoLTE. However, its biggest disruption to the market has been its cheap, unlimited LTE plans, which upset incumbent CSPs' intentions to focus on volume-based pricing and move away from all-you-can-eat data.
