Ovum view

Summary

Ovum's 2017/18 ICT Enterprise Insights survey highlighted improving operational performance, streamlining the content supply chain to enhance productivity, and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) to safeguard profitability as the top three business priorities for almost half (50–56%) of media companies in the next 18 months. As "digital first" becomes the primary growth strategy for media companies, building cost-effective unified data repositories will be key to enhancing competitive edge. Therefore, in the multiscreen video services era, media storage vendors should follow a more unconventional expansion strategy rather than focusing predominantly on reducing business pain points across the media archiving workflow. Dell EMC has incorporated these changing business requirements into its strategic and technology roadmaps for media and entertainment. Its next-generation Isilon and ECS roadmap is focused on enabling media companies to not only enhance their data management capabilities but also streamline the content supply chain to create highly personalized media services anywhere, everywhere.

Shifting from effective data toward content lifecycle management will be a crucial differentiator

Traditionally, media storage vendors have focused primarily on facilitating high-performance shared and scalable archiving for premium content owners. This has created siloed islands of data across multiple archiving workflows, impeding the delivery of efficient multiplatform distribution at a lower TCO. Furthermore, with investments in premium data repositories (both structured and unstructured) increasing threefold, media companies are being pushed to unify and optimize their content supply chains in order to remain competitive in the long run. Dell EMC has customized its high-performance shared media storage portfolio to meet these industry-specific challenges and priorities with the following capabilities:

  • An average 48% per seat reduction in media archiving workflow TCO (for a five-year duration).

  • Hybrid cloud architecture to strengthen the workgroup collaboration workflow, improving time to market.

  • In-built metadata search across multiple archives and geographies on a real-time basis.

  • Pre-packaged performance monitoring plug-in to support live linear and OTT streaming capabilities.

  • Highly secure and horizontally diversified software-defined media archiving functionalities (dedicated, multitenant), providing economies of scope (i.e., choice of consumption models).

  • A robust unified content supply chain workflow, with a comprehensive partner ecosystem (from media acquisition to distribution). Some collaborative use cases extend from media asset management (MAM) to content delivery network (CDN) solutions with partners such as Grass Valley, Dalet, Edgeware, and AWS Elemental.

  • Support for multiformat rich content management including SD, HD, and UHD (4K/8K).

As more media companies embark on the journey to create a highly personalized quality of experience (QoE) for audiences across multiple distribution channels, reducing inefficiencies across the upstream content supply chain will be essential (i.e., from media acquisition to preparation). Furthermore, as software-defined workflows become the norm in media and entertainment, Dell EMC's Isilon and ECS offerings are well positioned to provide the next-generation infrastructure to build an "interactive data company."
