This report highlights the main trends in the TV consumer technology industry, as mapped in Ovum's TV Technology Tracker.

Highlights

  • The TV technology space saw record activity on multiple levels in 3Q18, with most of the quarter's announcements made during and around September's IBC event in Amsterdam.
  • There was a total of 86 pieces of TV technology news in the quarter. Within this, there was a record figure for "global" announcements as vendors seek to expand their solutions to operators across the globe.
  • The rise of Android TV has meant that vendors have started developing go-to-market solutions of their own to assist bidding operators wanting to launch the service. There were 15 Android-related announcements made during 3Q18 alone, making it a record quarter for the platform.

    Telco loyalty programs are about more than improving churn

    Loyalty programs have long been held as key to indirect monetization for the communications service provider. Upcoming research from Ovum has verified that notion – loyalty schemes improve Net Promoter Scores (NPS – a measure of brand perception) and can help improve churn. They can also lead to net additions growth and can even earn revenues for the operator.
