Introduction

The Austrian National Assembly has passed an amended Copyright Act that provides for remuneration on storage media of any kind in order to compensate rights holders for private copying.

Highlights

  • Media such as computer hard disks, mobile phones enabling the performance of music or films and multi-purpose memory cards are now encompassed by the obligation to pay a levy.
  • Private copying remuneration in Austria is now capped at €20m ($21.7m) per year. This means if the total exceeds the cap, new tariff negotiations will be initiated to lower future tariffs.
