During the last month and at the recent Adtran analyst event, the company introduced its Modular Open Systems Architecture for Intelligent Cloud (Mosaic) as a platform for providers to implement virtualized managed services. Adtran had been using parts of the Mosaic platform for its development as an open systems platform. Now, it has branded this open systems development and is offering Mosaic as an open platform for management of legacy Adtran equipment. In addition, Mosaic supports software-centric, virtualized managed services along with third-party software.

Adtran offers a viable future platform and roadmap for its providers

Part of the surprise of this new platform and launch was that it had been in the works for so long without any public announcements or messaging to the industry at large. Adtran, taking its usual conservative approach, waited until it had the platform in use and had worked with many of its providers during the development cycle. Leveraging Adtran's expertise in the access network and longstanding use among many providers of all sizes, the platform seems to address both its multiple enterprise segments and the provider requirements for open systems.

Mosaic is middleware software that allows providers to integrate at their own pace and introduce third-party software as they see the need. But the platform also supports the need for service chaining with the necessary management and monitoring features. Although it is early days for the platform and large-scale service provider adoption, the CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter) architecture is integral to this platform and new software-centric services model.

Ovum believes that Mosaic provides a balance between supporting legacy Adtran services and opening the door for future third-party software, features, and service bundling. Adtran has finally made its move to become part of the new and growing ecosystem of virtualized managed services that will be required for the future growth of its network equipment, service providers, resellers, and enterprise customers.
