Wireline access network transformations are being driven by bandwidth upgrades to improve QoE (quality of experience). While network transformation cost is a concern, it is not a key driver at this time. The focus is on subscribers – both residential and business – and the ability to offer services faster, including cloud-based service provisioning. Ovum interviewed 50 wireline access network service providers around the world to understand their priorities for network transformations, along with their challenges and use of support partners.
Network transformation presents challenges across the three major stages – planning, implementation, and operations/management. Highly rated challenges included choosing the right technology strategy and understanding its impact on future upgrades, completing the upgrade right the first time, meeting customer activation targets, keeping legacy networks up-to-date, preventing service interruptions while updating software, and reaching capacity optimization.
Many of the cited challenges can be mitigated through enhanced vendor relationships, improved tools, and targeting internal talent gaps. Service providers expect to increase their already significant usage of network equipment vendors and telecom software vendors.
