This spreadsheet projects unit sales, installed base, and revenues for virtual reality (VR) headsets through 2021. The forecasts include breakdowns by device type (mobile VR, dedicated VR, and promotional VR), by use case (portable or home), and by region.

  • The VR hardware market grew 700% in 2016, to 42.5 million units. These included 27.2 million promotional VR "cardboard" type devices, 12.5 million mobile VR, and 2.9 million dedicated VR headsets.
  • Lower than expected sales of mobile VR headsets led us to review our total unit sales forecast downward from 138 to 69 million unit sales in 2020. But the resulting shift in the device mix from cheap mobile VR to premium dedicated all-in-one VR headsets will boost hardware revenues by an additional $2.8bn in 2020.
