Introduction

This is an update of Vodacom Group's activities, covering mobile, fixed broadband, operator strategies, and key product and service launches.

Highlights

  • The group's total revenue (ex Safaricom) grew by 1.5% YoY to ZAR22.98bn ($1.6bn) in 4Q18, supported by a strong performance in its international business. South Africa revenue was impacted by increased currency volatility. International revenue recorded strong growth in data and M-Pesa revenue, driven by strong service uptake.
  • The group's active mobile subscriptions grew by 7.8% YoY, to 83.34 million (including 4.34 million IoT connections), adding 3.08 million new subscriptions in South Africa (including 840,000 IoT connections), and 2.98 million in international markets, representing 6.8% and 9.3% growth, respectively.
  • Vodacom's M-Pesa experienced high growth, recording a 30.3% YoY rise to ZAR851m, contributing 16.4% to overall service revenue. This growth was supported by a strong service uptake that saw the number of active M-Pesa users increase by 20.6% to 13.41 million at end-December 2018. Vodacom continued to promote M-Pesa service uptake.
