Vietnam had 28.7 million 3G subscriptions out of 136.15 million mobile subs at end-2014. Though 3G take-up has been quick, there is still big potential for development in the market, with 3G penetration only around 30%.


  • With the country’s second-largest mobile operator, MobiFone, being separated from VNPT and going through privatization, the market will become more competitive. The new independent MobiFone is expected to put the heat on the two state-owned operators, Viettel and VinaPhone.
  • Regulator the MIC has indicated that Vietnam will award 4G licenses in 2016, and will start preparations in late 2015.
