Highlights

  • 3G penetration is increasingly steadily in Vietnam, and the market is expected to see 4G deployment begin soon. Four operators were granted LTE licenses in 4Q16, and the first operator started a commercial launch in November. There is great potential for 4G to serve as a foundation for digital economic development.
  • Fiber has replaced ADSL to become the dominant technology in fixed broadband. As the government has approved a plan that sets clear goals for national broadband development, broadband deployment will continue growing quickly for the next several years.
  • OTT is developing quickly, but players still need time to make a profit. Domestic players such as operators Viettel and VinaPhone as well as foreign investors such as PCCW are introducing OTT apps in the market. However, most users still prefer free products, and OTT players need some time to make their users accept paying for content.
