Summary

Verizon completed successful NG-PON2 vendor interoperability testing in December last year. This interoperability testing is an important milestone in NG-PON2's path to commercialization, enabling Verizon to adopt equipment from multiple vendors at both ends of the network. On a larger scale, it reflects Verizon's commitment to openness, programmability, and scalability in access networks.

Verizon's open approach will accelerate NG-PON2's adoption

Wireline access networks are complex, proprietary, and difficult to scale and upgrade. Verizon is striving to streamline its upgrade to NG-PON2 by ensuring vendor interoperability before commercial deployments begin. In addition, Verizon has plans to share its OMCI specifications with the vendor community. These specifications define the management and control of the ONTs (optical network terminals) – the subscriber-side equipment. By being open, Verizon hopes to reduce the amount of vendor proprietary software, which further supports NG-PON2 equipment interoperability at both ends – the central office and customer premises. This openness supports Verizon's plan for NG-PON2 commercial deployments later this year.

Verizon's open approach to NG-PON2 vendor interoperability will accelerate the adoption of this next-gen PON technology by other communications service providers. While NG-PON2 is more expensive than fixed optics-based, next-gen PON approaches, such as XGS-PON, it has several key advantages. NG-PON2's multiple-wavelength approach enables an operator to assign different subscriber types to different wavelengths, such as business subscribers to one wavelength and residential customers on another. Multiple wavelengths also support the wholesaling or unbundling of access networking, such as assigning a wavelength to another operator or virtual network operator. The ability to bundle multiple wavelengths supports the expanding need for MBH (mobile backhaul).

The complexities of wireline access networks have inhibited upgrades by operators. These complexities have also hurt many vendors as they struggle to develop and maintain numerous software protocols for every piece of access equipment deployed by each operator. Verizon's open approach with NG-PON2 is a major step toward openness, faster deployment, and scalability.
