Introduction

The US is home to a mature mobile market, with 494 million subscriptions at the end of 3Q19. The mobile subscription count is forecast to grow 13.52% between the end of 2019 and end of 2024, while that of fixed broadband is forecast to grow 14.38% and that of pay TV to fall -13.26%.

Highlights

  • 5G deployments have so far been with mmWave spectrum (except for Sprint with mid-band spectrum) in the US. This has limited the coverage provided. T-Mobile will be the first to launch 5G in low-band spectrum in December 2019.
  • US operators have been getting into new segments. T-Mobile has entered both the pay-TV and home broadband segments, while Comcast and Charter have both entered the mobile segment. Sprint remains the only major US operator with a mobile-only consumer business focus.
  • AT&T now a full portfolio of OTT video services. In addition to AT&T TV Now (previously, DirecTV Now), AT&T has Watch TV, AT&T TV, HBO Now, and in 2020 will add HBO Max.
