Introduction

This is an update of the Tunisian telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband, operator initiatives, and regulation. It includes subscriptions forecasts for mobile and fixed broadband.

Highlights

  • The entry of Lycamobile, the UK-based MVNO giant that focuses on low-cost calls, is forecast to continue spurring price competition in the Tunisian market. Operators are focusing on developing data services, and launch of LTE in 2016 will result in further growth in mobile broadband. However, the high cost of LTE will mean 3G remains the dominant technology
  • The Tunisian government’s digital agenda is underway with an MoU signed with Ericsson in November for the development of digital services in the country, but for digital to fully take off, mobile operators must develop detailed digital strategies. Imminent rollout of FTTx will further accelerate growth in the fixed market, but xDSL will remain the dominant technology over the forecasting period.
  • Free-to-air TV will continue to dominate. Ovum forecasts growth in the IPTV sector, but the high level of illegal access to pay-TV content will continue to hold back the sector. Macroeconomic factors, taxation on smartphones and Internet censorship will play a major role in the growth of Tunisian telecoms sector in the near future.
