Introduction

On April 11, 2019, Ofcom published three consultations related to the future of landline telephone services in the UK. These consultations follow a previous statement published in February 2019, which outlined the benefits of moving landline services from traditional PSTN networks to IP technology.

Highlights

  • One of Ofcom's proposals promotes trust in telephone numbers by pushing for a key change in the way numbers are used by networks, which should help tackle nuisance and scam calls. Another of the consultations relates to the future of interconnection and call termination, and the final one is a review of the rules on phone numbers.
