Introduction

This is an update of Thailand’s telecoms market, covering fixed broadband and mobile market trends and regulation. It includes service provider performance, multiplay services and bundling, MVNOs, and TV/video market outlook.

Highlights

  • - Mobile market is broadband-ready. Thailand had over 90% 3G penetration at end-2015 thanks to aggressive 3G migration by operators through 2015 to free up 2G spectrum for 4G. 2G share at low single digit in 2015, and expected closure of 2G networks this year. - 2015 was challenging for AIS and DTAC in terms of revenue growth.
  • - Fixed broadband attracting investments. AIS committed to enter the market in 2015, investing THB1bn during first year. The NBTC and the ICT ministry have allocated an initial budget of THB38bn ($1.05bn) for rollout of a national broadband network. - MVNOs enter into alliance to enhance competitiveness. MVNOs Samart I-mobile, Data CDMA Communication (MyWorld3G), 168 Communication, and the White Space have formed an alliance called The Thailand MVNO Club.
  • - Thailand is in transition to digital TV. NBTC granted 24 commercial digital licenses to 19 companies to operate digital TV in Thailand in 2014.
