Patient engagement, electronic health records integration, improved patient outcomes, and the use of data analytics were among the major themes at HIMSS 2015. For the telecoms providers that attended the conference, remote patient monitoring, integrating mobility, and enabling patient–provider–caregiver communications were high priorities.
Telco healthcare programs have historically been full of aggressive, even aspirational, expansion into many solutions within the sector. They involved standalone point solutions that were not connected with or integrated into healthcare providers or payers. Although some interesting and innovative solutions were available, few could be integrated into the healthcare ecosystem completely or had scalable deployments that improved patient outcomes, addressed patient engagement, or monitored chronic diseases.
At HIMSS 2015, however, it was clear that the telco programs have undergone a process of refocusing. Telcos have aligned with some of the major healthcare ecosystem players to provide integrated solutions that will enable and address increasing patient engagement, facilitate remote monitoring, and – eventually – improve patient outcomes. They seem to have recognized that by working with major healthcare players they can increase adoption and eventually have the large-scale deployments that have previously been missing. The telco brand or channel may or may not be a major part of the final healthcare solution, but improving communications between patients, healthcare providers, and caregivers will be more sustainable and scalable than in the past.
