At OFC 2015, Macom Technology Solutions of Lowell, Massachusetts, showcased an array of chips for metro, access, data center, and long haul. Its 100G transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) driver are well received partly because the number of suppliers is limited.
Macom displayed an impressive suite of physical-media-dependent chips at OFC 2015, showcasing its product portfolio breadth and attacking new areas with good near- and long-term opportunities. These include:
Dual linear TIA for 100G metro receivers. The metro market is projected to start shipping at the end of 2015, so the timing of Macom's product introduction is good. Moreover, there has been only one TIA supplier since coherent 100G started shipping so customers are excited to see a competitive product offering.
Macom introduced a VCSEL driver that includes TIAs and clock and data recovery (CDR) for short-reach connections inside data centers. This is a new Macom offering and the company reports that it is generating significant market interest. This solution is attractive because there is only one merchant VCSEL driver supplier and that product does not include CDR with the driver chip.
Macom's linear electro-absorption modulator (EML) driver was used to demonstrate 400G transmission over 2km for a data center application. Discrete multi-tone modulation was used but the driver supports pulse-amplitude modulation too.
Macom's quad drivers were used in the industry's first 400G transceiver demonstration with Kaiam, using 16 lasers at 25G.
Macom's 46G quad drivers were also showcased for the 200G and 400G long-haul market, where telecom carriers and data center operators are interested in higher-bandwidth solutions.

Macom's pipeline represents a nice portfolio of chips, some with immediate market interest and others that will take some time to see substantial volumes.
