Introduction

This is an update of China's telecoms market, covering fixed broadband, mobile market, and TV trends. It includes service provider performance, multiplay services and bundling, fixed broadband pricing, mobile data pricing, regulation changes, and operator initiatives.

Highlights

  • With the government putting emphasis on an “Internet+” strategy, there might be more policies to enhance mobile-internet-related business. However, the regulator's strategy of speed upgrades and tariff reductions is putting pressure on the major operators’ revenue growth.
  • The mobile market has been in the process of 4G migration since MIIT awarded 4G licenses in December 2013. 4G subscriptions now account for more than half of total users. LTE-Advanced is the technology that all operators are working on at the moment.
  • FTTx adoption is growing quickly. FTTx subscriptions now account for 90% of total fixed broadband users. China Mobile saw the largest year-on-year growth. In acquiring Tietong in November, it quickly expanded its market share.
