Introduction

This is an update of Japan's telecoms market, covering mobile, fixed broadband market trends, and regulation. It includes service provider performance, multi-play services and bundling, fixed broadband pricing, and operator initiatives.

Highlights

  • In Japan, mobile competition is largely centred on LTE, and networks are becoming faster with the launch of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A). KDDI’s LTE-A network coverage has reached 99%, and offers downlink communication speeds of up to 150Mbps. The WiMAX 2+ (WiMAX 802.16m) network delivered maximum download speeds of 110Mbps.
  • The three operators have continued with discounted and flat-rate voice and data plans in order to lure customers, while discounted billing is offsetting revenue growth from other segments.
  • Operators are taking smartphones to unconventional consumer segments in order to improve smartphone penetration and increase incremental ARPU. KDDI launched BASIO and Miraie smartphones targeting junior and senior users.
