Introduction

As PCCW-HKT completed acquisition of CSL in 1H14, the five operators in the mobile market became four. Competition has been less intense and the market more rational. Operators report “signs of firmer pricing” and the trend is expected to continue.

Highlights

  • After the completed acquisition of CSL in May 2014, PCCW-HKT has been conducting an all-round integration. PCCW-HKT has maintained its market leadership with a mobile base of 4.65 million at end-1H15, up 3% year-on-year. Total mobile revenue was up 108%, reaching $775m at end-1H15,with service revenue taking a 76% share, up 97% year-on-year.
  • In early August 2015, PCCW-HKT’s 10G broadband service became available to all residential premises within HKT’s FTTH-ready coverage, priced at a monthly rate of HKD2,888 ($372.6) including HKT cloud storage service uHub plus and anti-virus protection service F-Secure Safe Anywhere, on a 24-month contract basis.
  • In May 2015, 3 Hong Kong extended its cooperation with WhatsApp. Customers can now subscribe to the basic WhatsApp Data Pack at HKD8 ($1.03) a month for unlimited local messaging and to share photos and videos, or pay HKD18 a month for the WhatsApp Premium Data Pack, which adds access to recorded audio messages and the WhatsApp calling feature.
