This is an update on Tanzania’s telecoms market, covering fixed, mobile, and TV market trends and development. It includes service provider performance, multiplay services and bundling, fixed broadband pricing, and operator initiatives.

  • Tanzania's total subscriptions declined 0.8% QoQ to 39.9 million at end-1Q17. The mobile sector's subscriptions declined by the same value because of massive disconnections of fake mobile handsets by the government. Meanwhile, the fixed broadband segment's subscriptions grew 2% to 86,825.
  • LTE service adoption has been rising significantly in Tanzania as operators expand their network coverage to major cities and towns to reach more users. Vodacom and Zantel launched 4G LTE networks in 2Q16, while Tigo has recently announced a $70m investment to expand its network and prepare for 5G.
  • Tanzania has recorded significant growth in the digital services segments, including OTT video. Leading OTT service providers including Aflix, Netflix, ShowMax, and Facebook have launched services and the services uptake has been promising.
