  • The Algerian telecoms market is still underdeveloped with a large amount of room for growth: 3G was only introduced into the mobile market in late 2013 and the fixed market is still being held back by Algerie Telecom’s monopoly.
  • Algeria’s pay-TV market is struggling with piracy issues and “gray market” issues. Most people access pay-TV content illegally via descrambling boxes or via smart cards purchased in France and forwarded to households in Algeria. As a result, more than 90% of pay-TV content is coming from “unspecified operators.”
  • With price wars pushing down ARPU, operators are moving away from traditional telecoms services in a bid to gain new revenue streams. This is reflected in recent service and product launches, such as Ooredoo’s mobile health clinic initiative and the launch of business data plans from Mobilis.
