Introduction

This is an update of the East Africa TV market covering an overview of the market, the pay-TV landscape, next-generation TV & OTT, and DTT development. It includes TV subscription and revenue forecasts for the period 2015–19.

Highlights

  • Between them, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia had a total 5.4 million TV households by the end of 2014. Of that total, 23%, or 1.2 million, were pay-TV households.
  • The region scores well in digital migration compared with other regions. Tanzania has already completed the switchover and the other markets have started the process of migrating to the digital terrestrial platform. The region has settled on DVB-T2 as the preferred transmission standard for DTT services.
  • Ovum forecasts that East Africa will have about 7.7 million TV households by the end of 2019. The number of pay-TV households will grow 53% to 1.9 million over the forecast period, 24% of the total.
