Introduction

This report provides an update on the French telecoms market, including mobile and fixed market analysis and forecasts. It also looks at operators' initiatives and content strategies, development and adoption of NGA technologies, M&A activity, and regulation.

Highlights

  • The French market shows signs of stabilization following the increased competition and price war initiated by the entry of Free Mobile into the market. The year-on-year revenue decrease slowed down for Orange and Bouygues in 1H15 compared to 1H14. Six blocks of 700MHz spectrum, each 5MHz wide, were auctioned in November 2015. All four mobile operators obtained spectrum in 700MHz, for a total price of €2.8bn ($2.9bn).
  • Netflix launched in France a year ago, but failed to disrupt the market. Operators pursue competition strategy, offering local services instead. In November 2015, Numericable-SFR launched its own VOD service, Zive. While Orange still offers quad-play, other operators are looking into more flexible pricing options, such as triple-play services that can be bundled with a number of high-end and low-end mobile options, thus competing with both Orange and Free at the same time.
  • 4G coverage has reached 70% of the population in France, and the number of 4G subscribers totaled 14.8 million in 2Q15. Ovum forecasts the number of 4G subscribers to reach 57.1 million by 2020. Bouygues Telecom and Orange are active in the IoT field. Bouygues Telecom launched an IoT network based on LoRa technology in June 2015, and Orange is planning to launch one in 2016.
