This analysis offers a global view of operators' mobile broadband pricing strategies, highlighting key trends from Ovum's 4Q14 tariff-tracking database.

Highlights

  • In 4Q14, there was a big increase in the number of integrated service plans being offered, and fewer data-only plans. One of the advantages is simpler pricing and plan schemes, and less complex marketing, advertising, and technical info. This has helped to reduce selling costs.
  • By far, the most popular and commonly offered single data allowance is 1GB. Furthermore, nearly 40% of all plans fell into the 1GB to 5GB range. Average per MB pricing for a 1GB service plan at US$0.041 averages nearly twice that of a 2GB plan at US$0.021 and nearly 4x that of a 5GB plan, which carries an average per-MB price of US$0.011.
  • Departing from trends in our last sample, more operators are offering unlimited service plans (sometimes with throttling imposed). In 4Q14, unlimited plans grew from just 4% of tariffs tracked in 2Q14 to more than 7% in 4Q14.
