Introduction

Total communications provider (CP) revenues fell throughout 2015, and capex was flat at just over $400bn. Strength from Internet content providers (ICPs) in the cloud/OTT sector was unable to offset steep declines in the CSP/telco sector.

Highlights

  • Total capex from all CP types was flat in 2015 at $405bn, despite CSP (telco) cutbacks. ICPs (cloud/OTT providers) now account for 15% of global capex, up 1 point from 2014, and this share is forecast to grow to 23% by 2020.
  • Annualized CP revenues grew steadily from $2.2 trillion in 2009 to $2.86 trillion in 2014 but fell every quarter in 2015. Capex for both fixed and mobile communications service providers (CSPs) dropped around 5% vs. 2014. Growth in the Internet content provider (ICP) and carrier-neutral provider (CNP) segments slowed but remained strong.
  • Global CSP capex share: China, Japan, and the US, each with its own set of vendors, claimed 48% in 2015. Germany, Canada, UK each had 3%, followed by eight with ~2% each (Italy, France, India, Brazil, Australia, Russia, Korea, and Mexico) then Spain with 1%. Top 15 are ~75% of market.
