Introduction

Broadband access equipment revenues were very strong in 2015, reaching $8.0bn for the year, the highest level seen since 2012, with an increase of 30% versus 2014.

Highlights

  • Next-gen PON shipments and revenues will increase, albeit slowly. During 2015, 10G EPON shipments took place in both Asia-Pacific and North America. 10G GPON shipments began in 4Q15 in Asia-Pacific. Several operators announced next-gen PON trials in 2015 and several issued RFPs.
  • Copper and coax will continue to support broadband with new technologies expanding bandwidth capabilities.
  • The bandwidth marketing craze will continue. Announcements of 1G, 2G, and 10G bandwidth offerings are continuing. Higher-bandwidth offerings will spur the deployment of next-gen access technologies, whether fiber-, copper-, or coax-based.
