Introduction

Wireline broadband access equipment revenues remained strong in 1Q15, reaching $1.65bn, representing a very slight decrease compared to 4Q14 and a significant increase of 30% compared to 1Q14.

Highlights

  • The bandwidth marketing craze continues into 2015. We are continuing to see 1G and 2G network deployments in North America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. Some CSPs see the 1G and 2G thresholds as providing strong competitive advantages, even though most homes do not yet need these bandwidth levels. There have recently been several 10G FTTH service announcements
  • FTTx PON is supporting nonresidential markets. CSPs, both telco and cable, are pursuing business customers because they offer higher ARPU (average revenue per user) than residential customers. Next-gen PON adoption is increasing. US cable operators are beginning to deploy 10G EPON. Several CSPs, including Vodafone and Etisalat, are testing TWDM PON.
  • Vectoring and G.fast deployments will continue in 2015. We expect to see additional commercial announcements regarding the commercialization of vectoring-based VDSL2 and G.fast solutions. More than 18 million vectoring-ready ports have shipped since Ovum began tracking this category in 2014.
