Summary

Huawei’s Global Analyst Summit is well under way in Shenzhen. QoE (quality of experience) is a key theme given video’s domination of traffic in both fixed and mobile networks. Huawei is continuing to improve the viewer’s experience with everything from chipsets inside consumer devices to routers, user interfaces (UIs), and content aggregation platforms.

Huawei’s QoE approach is larger than network elements

Achieving QoE is not a single-point challenge – it is not simply a question of bandwidth on a fixed network or 4G LTE availability on a mobile network. QoE requires an end-to-end approach.

Huawei’s strategy encompasses consumer viewing behaviors, such as binge viewing (watching a season’s worth of episodes in a weekend), the desire for appealing and simple UIs, and demand for multiscreen viewing on multiple devices. The goal is to improve the experience, leading to lower customer churn, improved network operations, and successful partnerships with OTT players.

Huawei has designed a range of products to support QoE throughout the device and network ecosystem:

  • Chipsets from HiSilicon, Huawei’s semiconductor subsidiary, for 4K TVs and set-top boxes (STBs), supporting QoE with content management features and functions; however, most of these chipsets are for China-only equipment

  • High-throughput routers – focusing on throughput and not merely bandwidth

  • UIs – providing the look, feel, and maneuverability of notebook icons on the TV screen and enabling control of many devices in the home through the TV screen

  • Next-gen IPTV platforms – enabling the aggregation of content for fast delivery.

QoE is on the radar for operators in competitive markets. Operators need to move beyond the best-effort mindset to ensure that value-added services truly provide quality experiences for subscribers. QoE is not easy to measure and indexes need to be developed. In addition, consumers do not replace TVs every year and operators do not replace routers frequently, so it will take time for end-to-end QoE to blend together.

Ovum will be following Huawei’s supporting role in QoE, paying attention to operator adoption and subsequent results.
