Introduction

Adding a new front to its wide-ranging war against Microsoft, Amazon expanded its portfolio of SaaS applications to include an offering it describes as unified communications (UC). But unless Amazon makes significant changes to Chime’s feature set, it will remain an immature and easy-to-overlook offering in a market crowded with very well-established alternatives.

Highlights

  • Chime, launched in February 2017, adds a freemium service that AWS describes as unified communications. In a certain sense, Chime is very UC-like and could be positioned as an alternative to most UC applications available to both SMEs and enterprises.
  • Chime is more of a web conferencing and online meeting service, and as such will compete more directly with other online meeting services than with UC services.

Features and Benefits

  • Describes Amazon Chime and explains how it fits into the enterprise services market.
  • Evaluates the degree to which Chime will complete with UC services.
